One week to go

There is now only one week to go to enter you team for the MTR 2011 league competition.  We have received enquiries from plenty of people and there looks like being at least 6 teams competing for the prestigious MTR trophy.

Team captains need to enter their team by completing the form HERE.  If you are thinking of getting a team together you might like to read some top tips HERE.

Top Tips for Team Captains

Top Tips for Team Captains Here are a few points for getting your team together:

1. Get a squad togetherAlthough touch is 6 a side it’s fast. Very fast. If played properly most players will only be able to manage a couple of minutes before they need a break.A squad of 12 would be a good minimum. May & June is holiday season for those without scholl aged children. Work committments often get in the way too. You will realise that you should’ve got a bigger squad when you have to play with no subs.

2. Get someone else to pay.If you have influence over corporate spend you may be able to get the business to write the cheque. To make this more likely prepare a case to get the funding. Make sure you include the following pointers: o Put the company name in your team name o Identifiy how the profile of the business will be raised o Choose team colours that reflect your corporate livery o Commit to write regular reports of your team performance and get it posted to this site.

3. Collect the money upfront If you need to self fund the entry then a fee of £120 is £10 per player for a squad of 12. If you want to get some kit together why charge £25 per player. That represents great value for money. £20 for a tee shirt and 10 weeks exercise is not far short of genius. There might even be a bit left over for some “social” activities. That’s it, you should be all set. Now all you need is 11 mates….

New start on 8th June 2010

There’s only 4 weeks left of the current touch rugby season.  The turn out on the 1st June 2010 was a little disappointing.  I’m sure this was due to hoilday commitments rather than the weather.

As a result we’re re-launchingMalmesbury Touch Rugby at Minety RFC on 8th June 2010.  Tell as many people as you can to come along.  Remember touch rugby is a game of MINIMAL contact.  This is why it is one of the fastest growing team sports in the UK (apart fromNorth Wiltshire!) and is suitable for players of any age and either gender

If you want to come and have a go come along to Minety RFC (we play on the top pitches – make your way to the tennis courts and we’re on the right through the gate).

First game will begin at 18.30

Look forward to seeing you there.

2008

Congratulations to Dave’s Digglers who created history by being the first team in MTR history to retain their title, running out deserved winners against a tiring & belligerent Grumpy Old Men outfit in the final.

The semi finals were closest on record with Semi final 1 being decided in the final minute. Tetbury had raced into a 3 – 1 half time lead against Grumpy Old Men by playing some superb touch rugby. Whilst the Old Men might have been out on their feet at the hooter, they used the break to collect themselves and claw themselves back into contention at 4 – 4 with seconds remaining. With all the signs pointing to sudden death overtime with drop off, Grumpy Old men did the unthinkable and fashioned a score from nothing to snatch the deciding score seconds from the final hooter. Grumpy Old Men 5 – 4 Tetbury

If the first semi final was close, then only atoms separated Dave’s Digglers and Team Graeme. When observing at an atomic level a tunnelling electron microscope is the viewing implement of choice. However the referee was one provided with a pair of eyes and was the recipient of much encouragement from both sides to improve his decision making processes. In the end Team Graeme managed two last minute scores to level the match at 5 – 5 and move into the drop off procedure. At the final hooter, both sides were reduced by one. After two minutes the dead lock remained. Both sides were required to remove another player. Still no one could break the deadlock. With the hooter sounding for the next drop off to be effected, Dave’s Digglers utilised the vast expanses of open space to work themselves over for a score and a place in the final.

After both the semi finals it was time for the plate final. The Rattlebone team, made up entirely of people who’ve never been to the Rattlebone, ran out 7 – 4 winners against Aled’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Well done to both sides for making the plate final.

After the such fine semi finals the final was always likely to disappoint, and it did as a contest but not as a spectacle. Although Dave’s Digglers romped home 8 -2 the some of the touch rugby on show was truly magical. The sublime Sam Czerpak proving too much for the Old Men at the roll on numerous occasions. Grumpy Old Men’s captain, Huw Jones said “some of the play here to day was fantastic, touch was definitely the winner here this evening”. However that view was disputed by all of Dave’s Digglers and especially team Captain Mike Joynt when collecting the Winners trophy from the President of the England Touch Association Jeremy How.
