One week to go
There is now only one week to go to enter you team for the MTR 2011 league competition. We have received enquiries from plenty of people and there looks like being at least 6 teams competing for the prestigious MTR trophy.
Team captains need to enter their team by completing the form HERE. If you are thinking of getting a team together you might like to read some top tips HERE.
First Friendlies
Last night saw the first of our two “refresher” nights at MTR!
20 players were reminded (or learned for the first time) of the speed, skill and tought required to play touch rugby.
It was great to see so many youngsters to take a break from their GCSE/AS/A2 studies to have a run around and show off their skills. The standard was higher than the fitness levels.
I envisage both increasing significantly by the time of Finals Night!
I look forward to seeing everyone (and new comers) again next Tuesday
Everything Roll-ball Related
The rollball is the most common way of re-starting the game but what’s it all about?
1. When Required.
A player is to perform a Rollball under the following circumstances:
(a) When a touch has been effected;
(b) When possession changes due to the sixth touch;
(c) When possession changes due to the ball going to ground;
(d) When possession changes due to an infringement by an attacking player at a penalty or a tap;
(e) When possession changes when the half is touched (or places the ball on or over the scoreline) whilst in possession of the ball;
(f) When possession changes due to a player in possession of the ball running across the sideline, or
(g) When so directed by the referee.
2. Method.
The attacking player is to position on the mark, face the opponent’s (defending) scoreline, stand parallel to the sidelines, and roll the ball backwards along the ground between the feet a distance of not more than one (1) meter.
Once the ball is placed on the mark, the attacking player may step over the ball.
3a. Attacking Team.
Any other player of the attacking team may receive the ball from the Rollball and thus become the half. The half may pass or run with the ball. However, if touched, loses possession.
RULING – A change of possession.
3b. The half is not to delay picking up or gathering the ball. The player who performs the Rollball is not permitted to obstruct or otherwise prevent the defending team from gaining possession or effecting a touch on the half.
RULING – A penalty awarded to the non-offending team at the mark where the infringement occurred.
4. Defending Team.
All Players of the defending team are to retire a distance of not less than five (5) meters from the mark for a Rollball. Players of the defending team are not permitted to move forward of the five (5) meter position until the half has made contact with the ball.
RULING – A penalty awarded to the attacking team along a line five (5) meters forward of the mark for the Rollball and nearest the infringement.
5. Actions without Half in Position.
When the player in possession is required to Rollball without a half in position, players of the defending team may move forward of the five (5) meter positions as soon as the ball leaves the hand/s of the player in possession. Should a defending player gain possession, the match is recommenced with a Rollball at the same mark.
6. Voluntary Rollball.
A player in possession is not to perform a Rollball unless a touch has been effected.
RULING – A penalty awarded to the non-offending team at the mark where the Rollball occurred.
How is the game re-started?
There are only two ways the game can be restarted:
- Rollball
You must be standing with your shoulders parallel to the try line (i.e. not at an angle) and roll the ball through your legs. You may play the ball with your foot but this is not required.
You may not delay the rollball or roll the ball more than 1m
An incorrect rollball will result in a handover.
- Penalty tap
The ball must be place on the floor, tapped with the foot (only) through the mark and then picked up.
A penalty can be played as a rollball but not vice versa.
Please note that an incorrect penalty tap will result in a turnover with a subsequent roll.
When a penalty is award there are only TWO options:
-
- Return the ball to the mark of the penalty.
- Give the ball to an opposition player if they are calling for it.
Failure to do either of these will result in a 10m penalty. Repeat offenders will receive further sanctions.
Dummy Half
The player that picks the ball from a rollball is called the dummy half.
The ball is not out (i.e. defenders cannot move forward) until the dummy has played the ball. However, the dummy half is not permitted to delay fielding the ball after a roll ball.
The dummy half may run following the rollball but if touched by an onside defender, an immediate handover occurs. Play is restarted with a roll.
The dummy half may not score
